Tucson Medical Center ClownCare Program
TMC for Children has 107 pediatric beds throughout its Pediatric Unit, Newborn Intensive
Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and other special care beds. TMC for Children has an
inpatient average daily census of 64, treats more than 30,000 patients annually in the
Children’s Emergency Center; and treats more than 12,000 children through ambulatory
visits.
In January of 2007, TMC started a clowning program for toddlers who are ill in
Pediatrics. Each week clowns wheel a puppet stage, ClownMobile, into the playroom and
perform for the children, their siblings and parents. These performances consist of puppet
shows, magic and bubbles using a bubble machine. Having a child ill in the hospital is very
difficult for parents. Realizing this, we created "smile coupons" to give the parents along
with a humorous prescription to help get their child better.

This program has been very well received by the children, their families and the staff and
is ready to expand. TMC is recruiting adults (18+) who are interested in joining the
ClowCare Program as "Laugh Doctors." As a Laugh Doctor you will use laugher and smiles
as "medicine" to bring cheer to toddlers who are ill in Pediatrics. Laugh Doctors get to
choose a funny doctor's name and keep their volunteer jackets!! No experience is
necessary and training will be provided.

This program is now expanding to recruit new Laugh Doctors. To inquire about or volunteer
