HealthSouth ClownCare Program
At HealthSouth inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, a network of highly skilled physicians,
nurses and therapists utilize the latest in equipment and techniques to return patients to
home and work. HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute is also a Stroke Rehabilitation Center
and employs treatment teams of specially trained clinicians in the areas of physical,
occupational and speech therapies, in addition to nursing.

These treatment teams meet weekly to develop individualized courses of treatment for
patients. The course of treatment could include a combination of the following specialty
programs: cognitive retraining, behavior management, neuropsychological testing and
treatment, augmentative communication, driving education, and gait and balance training.

In December 2007 HealthSouth initiated a ClownCare program for its patients. Each week
clowns visit as Laugh Doctor's to cheer up the patients performing a funny skit including
magic and twisting balloon animals. This skit, a "Laugh Doctor" exam, is predicated on
"laughter being the best medicine" and is an exam with funny props. These include a very
large thermometer, tongue depressor, a stethoscope with a toilet plunger on the end and a
"cat scan" using a stuffed kitten and magnifying glass (..a kitty cat scan). At the end of
the Laugh Doctor exam we give the patient a prescription for renewed health and a very
valuable coupon they can redeem for "One Free Smile."

This program is now expanding to recruit new Laugh Doctors. Laugh Doctor volunteers get
to chose a funny doctor's name and keep their volunteer jackets!! To inquire about or
