A sweet six year old girl with blue eyes and blond pigtails is in the
intensive care unit connected to a ventilator. She has had a
tracheotomy and cannot talk.

She is restrained so that the tubes and wires of her support
system do not become tangled or disconnected. I hand her mom
a clown nose and she places it on her daughter's face. I hold up a
mirror to the girl's face and in a moment not seen in weeks, her
face elicits a broad smile and a tiny tear runs down her mom's
face.
